Dry, itchy skin can be most prevalent during the cold winter months. This is when humidity and temperatures drop making skin particularly vulnerable to dryness and cracking. When it comes to winter skincare tips, the key to skincare success is moisture and knowing which products to use. It’s important to take extra time to care for your skin during the winter beyond your daily or nighttime beauty routine. Don’t worry though, we’ve got all the information and skincare tips you need to protect and safeguard your skin. Practice these winter skincare routine tips for healthy hydrated skin, and learn about the ingredients and products you should be using to safeguard your skin in the winter.
How to Protect & Safeguard Your Winter Skin?
Avoid Hot Water
Keep it cool. Chilly winters may make a long hot shower or bath sound enticing, but hot water can actually wash away skin’s natural oils, leaving it extra dry and itchy. Instead, take warm showers and pat skin dry.
Moisturize More Often
To lock in moisture, apply lotion after showering while the skin is still damp. It’s best use a cream-based product that includes hydrating ingredients (more about this below). Apply more throughout the day.
Vapor Relief
The dry winter air is continually pulling moisture from your skin. The best way to combat this is to run a humidifier. A humidifier fills the air with moisture which will help hydrate your skin all over and improve cracked lips, limp hair, and itchy skin.
Apply Sunscreen
Just because it’s winter, you still need to protect your skin from harmful UV rays with sunscreen. Be sure to apply generously before heading outside.
Exfoliate
Exfoliating helps remove all the dry, dead skin cells and will leave your skin looking softer and smoother. Exfoliating also helps your moisturizing products penetrate more easily. In the winter, you should aim to exfoliate twice per week.
Bundle Up Outside
With the cold air and wind that dries out your skin, be sure to cover up when outdoors. On windy days be sure to protect all body parts, including your face. Try wrapping up in a scarf for extra protection.
Look for These Ingredients in Your Winter Skincare Products
Skincare Ingredients
During the winter months, you should be using products that contain these ingredients to keep your skin moisturized. Learn about each of them.
- Humectants – Humectants attract and bind moisture. They are hydration heroes and help keep your skin moisturized by creating a protective barrier. Humectants include hyaluronic acid, glycerin, and others. Natural humectants include honey and Aloe Vera.
- Hyaluronic Acid – Hyaluronic acid is one of the most popular humectants on the market making it great to hydrate your skin. The reason it is so popular and used in many products is that it can bind 1,000 times its weight in water.
- Ceramides – Ceramides are found naturally in our outer layer of skin and help seal everything together to create a protective barrier. We lose ceramides as we age so it is beneficial to find products that contain the synthetic version in order to retain skin moisture and restore the protective barrier.
- Collagen – Collagen is a key protein found in the skin which keeps the skin smooth and elastic. We also lose collagen as we age. Topical collagen products may help with skin moisturizing but not in the rebuilding of collagen. If looking to rebuild, Vitamin C and also collagen supplements have been found to induce the production of collagen.
