Prepare the oranges: use a peeler to remove the peel of 1 of the oranges in strips. Set aside the peels and then juice the orange. Slice the 2nd orange and reserve for garnish.
In a saucepan, stir the orange peels, orange juice, and remaining ingredients on medium heat until the sugar dissolves, approximately 2 minutes. Increase heat to high, bring the mixture to boil and immediately reduce the heat to low. Simmer for 30 minutes.
Strain the mixture; discard any remaining solids. Ladle into mugs. Garnish, if desired, with reserved orange slices, cinnamon sticks, and star anise

Tip: Keep this warm in the crockpot. After straining, pour into the crockpot to keep warm.
